Greenacres names deputy mayor, but not before some drama

Jonanthan Pearce was named deputy mayor again, but not after some minor drama.

GREENACRES — It’s no secret there’s a three-member alliance on the City Council.

Deputy Mayor Jonathan Pearce, Councilwomen Judy Dugo and Lisa Rivera normally vote in lockstep, often leaving council members Peter Noble and Paula Bousquet on the wrong end of most votes.

That held true at the April 4 meeting when Noble made a motion to approve Bousquet as deputy mayor to replace Pearce.

Councilman Peter Noble made a motion to name Paula Bousquet deputy mayor, but it failed.

Councilman Peter Noble made a motion to name Paula Bousquet deputy mayor, but it failed.

The deputy mayor title is routinely rotated after each election.

When Noble made the motion, no one seconded it. To interrupt the awkward silence, Noble sheepishly said, “Paula can second her own motion.”

Which she did.

More crickets until Dugo said there’s no reason why Pearce shouldn’t remain deputy mayor.

Cue scratching record noise…

“This is not meant to be personal in any way, but Deputy Mayor Pearce chaired a few meetings and one in particular that was less than civil and he showed his professionalism,” Dugo said. “He did an excellent job and was unbiased.”

Rivera agreed.

Noble, of course, did not.

“I’ve been here 18 years and this is the policy we’ve followed and it’s worked well (naming a deputy mayor) by seniority and going down the line,” he said. “A deputy mayor is not chosen twice.”

Pearce begged to differ.

“You did it two years in a row,” he said, referring to Noble.

“There were not enough persons qualified so I filled the spot,” Noble said.

So, Dugo made the motion to keep Pearce as deputy mayor.

And the motion passed by — you guessed it — a 3-2 vote.
