Group circulates online petition, plans rallies against Winding Trails

Opponents to the Winding Trails project in Wellington are starting to get organized.

A group has circulated an online petition that already has gotten more than 400 signatures, as of Wednesday afternoon. Developers are hoping to build on the defunct Wanderers Executive Golf Course by getting approval for nine large lot equestrian estates, including barns, owner’s apartments and groom’s quarters.

The opposition is hoping to reach 500 signatures before a Wellington Village Council meeting Tuesday where the board is expected to take a first vote.

The opposing group is also hosting two “rallies” — one on Thursday at 7 a.m. outside Lakefield West and one on Friday at 3:45 p.m. outside Wellington Landings Middle School. The developers — Ward Real Estate — also have had numerous meetings with nearby residents, making changes to the plan based on their suggestions.

The council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Village Hall. If it’s approved, the plans will then get state approval before coming back to the village for a second vote in January.

The Equestrian Preserve Committee and the Planning, Zoning and Adjustment Board have already recommended approval.
