GREENACRES — Early Tuesday afternoon, a picture of mayoral candidate Jonathan Pearce removing a sign of his challenger, Joel Flores, from the Pine Ridge North II condo, began circulating on Facebook.
Pearce, who lives in the condo on Sea Pine Way and who has served on the council since 2010, admitted he took the sign, but said he did it for a reason.
“Joel was asked by our homeowner’s association to take the signs down because they were in the (Palm Beach) County right of way,” Pearce said. “He’s been doing it all election to cause trouble. They asked him to remove the signs a couple of times and he didn’t do it, so I took ’em.”
Flores denied Pearce’s claim.
“I have not been notified about removing any signs,” he said. “All my signs have been placed near or next to his.”
An attempt to reach the HOA was unsuccessful.
Flores said last week City Clerk Joanna Cunningham notified him by email that a handful of his signs were dumped in a fenced area behind Okeeheelee Middle School on Pinehurst Drive and that he needed to retrieve them.
“They were all thrown behind a barbed wire fence,” Flores said. “I didn’t put them there. I wasn’t going to jump onto private property with barbed wire fence to pick up my yard signs.”
Flores said as of this afternoon about 70 of his signs have gone missing.
